Abstract

The hydraulic jump is considered one of the most effective methods in dissipating energy through the stilling basin downstream of the control structures. The energy dissipation in the stilling basin contributes to protecting the area ‎downstream of the control structures from erosion. The aim of this study is to calibrate the Flow 3D program using published practical experiments by Willi H. Hager & Nicola V. Bretz (1986).‎ A three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed using the Flow 3D program to investigate the dissipation of energy due to hydraulic jump through stilling basins with negative steps and compare the results of the study with the results of the practical experiments in the research of Willi H. Hager & Nicola V. Bretz (1986).

It was clear from the comparison that the program has a high ability to simulate the phenomenon and to show results that are close to reality with an error not more than 10%.
